Our History

Glen Rock Stair officially opened its doors in 1950, when Nick Postma bought Faber and Sons Stair. The purchase included the home on the property as well as the garage where the stairs were manufactured. Nick Postma had been one of Faber and Sons Stair’s four employees, and he renamed the company because of its location in Glen Rock NJ. His son-in-law, Jim Veenstra, joined him in the family business, and since then two more generations have followed in their footsteps.

Faber and Sons Stair had been in business since around 1900; its history reflects the rapid changes in technology during the first half of the twentieth century. For example, in the early 1900s stairs were delivered by horse-drawn wagon, but in 1914 a Buick truck was purchased to deliver the stairs. On Sundays a back seat was added to that truck to bring the family to church. It was one of the first gas-powered vehicles in Glen Rock at the time.

Since then, the company has continued to change and grow along with the area. It has expanded its manufacturing capabilities to meet increased demand for custom residential and commercial stairs, relocating in 1980 to larger premises in Franklin Lakes NJ. GRS now has a fleet of vehicles for its business operations, and it employs over 25 people.

The company has been family owned and operated for three generations. To us, ‘family’ is a concept that extends beyond the family members working in the business to include employees, customers, suppliers, and neighbors. We try to treat all people involved with Glen Rock Stair with honesty, consideration, and respect. We also try to nourish our community roots by participating in civic and charitable activities, such as Habitat for Humanity projects in the state of NJ.
